The Wood Materials Science group at ETH Zürich belongs to the Institute for Building Materials in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geomatic Engineering.
Thanks to a cooperation professorship, the research group is also affiliated with Empa, Dübendorf. The research group has broad expertise in wood materials science, including modification and functionalization of wood and wood-derived materials, and their structural, chemical, and physical characterization at various length scales.
In the project, we will utilize novel lignin-based resin systems, developed by project partners, for lignin reassembly into wood scaffolds to produce high-strength, fully bio-based, and recyclable wood composites for targeted applications. Tailormade lignin compositions will also be used to functionalize wood surfaces to render them electrically conductive or to equip them with other beneficial properties for certain application fields.
